Our mission: To nourish communities using surplus food

Our aims:

  • strengthen communities by bringing people together around a healthy meal

  • encourage friendships by creating spaces for people from all backgrounds and walks of life to have fun together

  • improve nutrition and reduce hunger by cooking healthy meals for those in need

  • change attitudes to food by cooking with surplus ingredients and spreading our passion for food and the environment

Where we’ve come from: our first cook in May 2009 will always be remembered as a pivotal moment in FoodCycle’s history. After six months of getting the key ingredients of food, volunteers and a kitchen together for the first ever cooking session, we all looked into a pot of brown slop. It wasn’t the gourmet meal we wanted, but we’d come too far to quit.

Where we’re going: we’ve learned a huge amount since that first cooking session, but some things have always stayed the same: what we do, how we do it and the people we exist to serve. When a group of committed volunteers and an eclectic mix of ingredients come together to create a meal for the community, delicious meals are created out of each FoodCycle cooking session. Conversations begin and friendships are made.
