I’m really enjoying being part of the new Yardley FoodCycle hub – which uses surplus food to create a community meal for all. Although we’ve only just opened at St Cyprians, it’s already going down well, with lots of regulars coming along each Wednesday to join us for a meal. Our hub volunteers, who collect food, chop veg and prepare and serve the meal, are real stars. It’s really rewarding to see the positive impact the hub is directly having on everyone involved. It’s a real ‘win-win’!
FoodCycle has reduced food waste in Bristol whilst increasing awareness about it, it has tackled food poverty, and it has integrated university students with the local community; lasting friendships have been made over hearty meals.
I’ve never come across a charity that ticks all the boxes like this. You’re doing something which is really positive to the environment by using surplus food, you’re meeting new people, talking to new people, getting new skills, and you’re also giving something back to the community. The feeling you get when you give somebody who really needs a meal a warm nutritious meal, you can’t beat it really!
